Product Details
Why choose the Wilcox & Gibbs M700-N/K?
Most overlockers can sew a rolled hem if you change the settings. The trouble is changing them back. In a busy workroom, that means lost time every time you switch jobs, and hems that vary depending on who set the machine up.
The M700-N/K is set up for rolled hemming and stays that way. Keep it next to your main overlocker and you'll always have a machine ready for finishing.
● A clean, consistent rolled edge on sheer and lightweight fabrics
● Trims, rolls and stitches in one pass, so there's no pressing or pinning first
● Quiet servo motor that only runs when you press the pedal and uses less power than a clutch motor
● Smooth slow-speed control for curves, corners and slippery fabric
● Supplied complete with table, stand and thread stand
● Tested by our engineers before it leaves us, and backed by our London workshop afterwards
Who is it for?
This machine earns its place anywhere delicate fabrics get hemmed regularly. That includes bridal and evening wear makers working in chiffon, tulle, satin and silk, and clothing manufacturers and CMT units hemming blouses, dresses and linings in volume.
It also suits scarf and accessories producers, alterations workshops, designers moving from samples into production, makers of napkins and light table linen, and fashion departments in colleges and universities.
It isn't the right machine for joining seams or for heavy fabrics such as denim, canvas or upholstery. For everyday seaming, you'll want a 4-thread or 5-thread overlocker. Browse our industrial overlockers, or call us and we'll point you to the right one.
Information
If you've ever tried to hem chiffon on a domestic machine, you'll know how quickly it goes wrong. The fabric slips, the edge frays and a simple hem turns into an afternoon's work.
The Wilcox & Gibbs M700-N/K does that job in one pass. It trims the edge, rolls it under and wraps it in thread, leaving the fine, narrow finish you see on bridal layers, evening gowns and silk scarves. It does it at industrial speed, and it does it the same way on the hundredth hem as on the first.
It runs on a silent direct drive servo motor, so it's quiet enough for a studio and gives you fine control when you're easing round a curved hem. It arrives on its own industrial table and stand, ready to work.

Looking after your machine
- Fine fabrics shed more lint than you'd expect, so it's worth brushing out the loopers, knife and feed area at the end of each day. Check the oil level each morning and top up with industrial sewing machine oil only. If stitches start to skip, change the needle first. It's usually the culprit.
- In regular use, we recommend a service once a year. Our engineers repair and service industrial overlockers in our London workshop. Find out about repairs and servicing.

What exactly is a rolled hem?
It's a very narrow edge finish. The machine trims the fabric, rolls the raw edge under and wraps it in thread, all in one go. It's the classic finish for chiffon, silk scarves, bridal layers and ruffles.
I already have an overlocker. Why buy a separate roll hem machine?
Speed and consistency. Converting a standard overlocker means changing settings, and sometimes parts, every time you switch between seaming and hemming. If you hem regularly, a dedicated machine pays for itself in saved set-up time and more consistent results.
Can I sew seams with it?
It's designed for rolled hems and edge finishing, not for joining seams. For seaming, a 4-thread or 5-thread overlocker is the better choice.
Which fabrics does it handle best?
Lightweight and delicate fabrics such as chiffon, georgette, organza, silk, satin, tulle, voile and fine linings. Run a test on a scrap first and adjust the tension and differential feed until the hem sits right.
Will it cope with denim or canvas?
No. Rolled hems aren't suited to heavy fabrics. Call us and we'll recommend a machine that is.
What does direct drive mean?
The motor is built into the machine head instead of hanging under the table on a belt. It's quieter, uses less power and starts and stops exactly when you want it to.
Will it run from a normal UK socket?
Yes, it runs from a standard 230V single-phase socket with a UK plug.
Can I see it before I buy?
Of course. Visit us at 286 Streatham High Road, London. Call 0208 769 2998 first and we'll have it ready to try.
What happens if it needs a repair?
Our engineers repair and service industrial overlockers in our London workshop, so you're not left on your own after you buy.
Which needles does it take?
Always use the correct industrial needle system, because the wrong one can cause skipped stitches and damage the loopers.
