Product Details
Why choose the Techsew 1660 (JUKI 1509) ?
Seams that stay lined up. The compound feed – feed dog, needle and walking foot all moving together – stops layers creeping, so piping, welting and multi-layer seams finish where they started.
Topstitching that looks the part. A 9mm maximum stitch and support for heavy bonded thread give you the bold, even stitching customers expect on leather and upholstery.
Less stopping, more sewing. The large-capacity bobbin means far fewer interruptions on long seams.
Room for bulky work. High presser foot clearance lets thick layers and seam allowances slide under the foot without a fight.
Backed by people who know machines. We'll help you decide if it's right before you buy, and our own engineers can service it afterwards.
Who is it for?
The 1660 earns its keep in upholstery workshops (sofas, chairs, cushions, piping), with leather workers making bags, belts, holsters and saddlery, and with car and marine trimmers sewing seats, covers, vinyl and leatherette. It's equally at home making canvas goods such as awnings, tarps and heavy bags, and in colleges and training workshops where students need a forgiving heavy-duty machine.
Not sure it's the right fit? If you mainly sew light fabrics like shirting, silk or jersey, a standard industrial lockstitch will serve you better. For boots, sleeves or bag gussets, you'll want a cylinder arm machine. Give us a call and we'll point you in the right direction.
Information
If you've ever watched two layers of leather drift apart halfway down a seam, you'll understand why walking foot machines exist. The Techsew 1660 grips the work from above and below, and moves the needle with it, so thick, slippery or awkward materials feed through together, stitch after stitch.
It's a proper workhorse for upholstery, leather goods, car and boat trim, and canvas. Heavy bonded thread, a long 9mm stitch for bold topstitching and a big bobbin that doesn't run out every ten minutes – this is a machine built for people who sew heavy work for a living.

Delivery, Installation & Returns
What actually is a compound feed walking foot?
It's a machine that moves your material three ways at once – the feed dog pulls from below, the needle travels with the fabric, and a walking foot steps it along from above. The result is layers that stay together and stitches that stay even, even on leather and vinyl.
Will it sew leather?
Yes – it's one of the main reasons people buy it. Pair it with a leather point needle and bonded thread and it handles everything from bag panels to upholstery hides.
How thick can I go?
Roughly 10mm, depending on what you're sewing and the needle and thread you choose. The 16mm clearance is the space under the foot, not how much it will stitch through. Tell us your materials and we'll advise honestly.
What thread should I use?
Bonded nylon or polyester, from around Tex 45 up to Tex 210 [confirm]. Heavier thread needs a bigger needle – we're happy to recommend the right pairing.
Is the Techsew 1660 a JUKI?
No – it's a Techsew-branded machine in the same class as the JUKI LU-1508/1509 walking foot models. [If checked: many common parts, such as feet and needles, interchange with those models.]
Is it suitable for a beginner?
Yes, if you're ready to step up to an industrial machine. The servo motor lets you sew as slowly as you like while you get the feel of it. For lighter home sewing, a domestic machine is the better buy.
Does it come with a warranty?
1 Years. This does not affect your statutory rights.
Can I see it before I buy?
Of course. Visit our showroom at 286 Streatham High Road, London – just call 0208 769 2998 first so we can have it ready to demonstrate.
