Why choose the M-TECH SMART 801?
It's the design the trade already trusts. The 801 is the industry's go-to skiver for a reason. It's simple, it's proven, and anyone who has worked in a leather workshop will recognise it. Knives, stones and rollers are easy to come by too.
Set it once, get the same result all day. Dial in your width and depth and the machine repeats it, piece after piece. No more edges that are a little thinner here and a little thicker there.
It's quiet. The servo motor only runs when you press the pedal, and you can set the speed to suit you. That makes a real difference if you work from a small studio or share a room with other people.
The knife sharpens on the machine. A built-in grinding stone lets you put the edge back on the knife in seconds, without taking anything apart.
It arrives ready to work. You get the head, table, stand and servo motor together, not a bare head you then have to build a workstation around.
You're buying from engineers. We test every machine before it leaves us, we'll talk you through setup on the phone, and our London workshop can service it for years to come.
Who is it for?
If you make bags, wallets, belts, purses or small leather goods, this is likely the machine that will change your workflow the most. It's just as useful in footwear, for thinning uppers and linings before closing, and in upholstery and car trimming, where bulky seam allowances show straight through the finished cover.
We also supply skivers to saddlery and equestrian workshops, fashion studios, and colleges and universities with leatherwork courses.
One thing to bear in mind: a skiver thins leather, it doesn't sew it. You'll still need a walking foot, cylinder arm or post bed machine for stitching. If you're kitting out a workroom from scratch, give us a call and we'll help you put the right pair together.
Information
-The secret to leatherwork that looks properly made
Pick up a well-made handbag and run your thumb along the edge. It's slim, it folds cleanly, and the seams sit flat. That isn't down to the stitching. It's down to what happened before the stitching: skiving.
Thinning the edge of the leather is what stops a fold from turning into a lump, and a seam from turning into a ridge. You can do it by hand with a knife, and plenty of makers start that way. But once you're skiving more than a handful of pieces a day, a machine pays for itself in time, in wasted leather and in consistency.
The M-Tech Smart 801 is built on the 801 design, the bell-knife skiver you'll find in shoe factories, bag workshops and leather studios all over the world. A spinning bell-shaped knife pares away the leather while a roller feeds it through, so the hundredth edge comes out exactly like the first.

Delivery and collection
This is a heavy machine, so give us a ring on 0208 769 2998 before you order and we'll quote delivery to your door. Or come and collect it from our shop at 286 Streatham High Road, London. We'll happily run it for you first so you can see it skive.
We can install selected machines too. Just ask when you call.
Looking after your machine
- Keep the knife sharp with light, regular touches on the grinding stone. A blunt knife tears leather instead of slicing it. Brush out leather dust from around the knife and roller at the end of each day, and oil the points shown in the manual.
- If it's in daily use, book it in for a yearly service with our London workshop. See our repairs and servicing.
- Safety first: always switch off at the mains before cleaning or adjusting the knife.

Delivery, Installation & Returns
What does a skiving machine actually do?
It shaves leather thinner, usually along the edge, so you can fold, turn or join pieces without a bulky seam. If you've ever wondered why shop-bought bags look neater than your own, this is usually the answer.
How thin can it go?
Both width and depth adjust. Tell us what leather you're using and we'll tell you straight whether it's a good match.
Will it skive vegetable-tanned leather?
Firm veg-tan needs a really sharp knife and careful setting up. If that's mostly what you work with, call us first.
Does it come with the table and motor?
Yes. Head, table, stand and servo motor all come together.
How do I sharpen the knife?
Use the grinding stone on the machine, with light touches while it's running. The manual shows you how
Can I see it working first?
Of course. Call 0208 769 2998 and we'll have one ready for you at 286 Streatham High Road.
Why is it called an 801?
801 is the name of a long-established skiver design. Lots of machines are built to it, and they all work in much the same way.
Can it sew leather as well?
No, it only skives. You'll need a separate sewing machine for stitching.
What's the warranty?
12 months warranty.
