Product Details
Why choose the the Janome HD9?
● A straighter, more consistent seam. The needle never has to swing side to side, so the whole machine is set up for straight stitching — and it shows in the results.
● Speed when you want it. Up to 1,600 stitches per minute for long runs, with a slider to cap the top speed when you need control.
● Calm, even at full speed. An aluminium body and 8 ball bearings on the main shaft keep vibration down.
● Both hands stay on your work. The knee lifter raises the foot, the needle stops down to pivot, and the automatic cutter trims your threads at the touch of a button.
● Fewer stops to change the bobbin. The larger metal bobbin holds around 40% more thread than a standard one.
Who is it for?
The HD9 suits anyone whose work is mostly straight seams and who wants them faster and neater than a standard domestic machine can manage.
● Quilters piecing blocks, quilting in straight lines or free-motion quilting with the darning plate
● Dressmakers and bridal sewers who need precise seams on fine, slippery fabrics
● Curtain and soft furnishing makers working through long lengths of heavier fabric
● Bag makers sewing canvas, denim, webbing and thick layers
● Tailors, small studios and costume departments who want reliable straight seams without a full industrial set-up
● Experienced home sewers ready to step up from a standard domestic machine
If you're sewing all day, every day, or working with heavy leather and upholstery, you'll get more from a full industrial sewing machine. Ask us and we'll help you compare.
Information
Most sewing machines try to do a bit of everything. The Janome HD9 Professional doesn't. It sews one stitch — a straight stitch — and every part of it is designed to do that job properly.
You feel the difference as soon as you start. The die-cast aluminium body keeps it steady at speed, the industrial-style rotary hook lays down a clean, even stitch, and when you've got long seams to get through you can open it up to 1,600 stitches per minute. Pull the speed slider back and it's just as comfortable easing round a curve in silk.
It gives you much of the feel of an industrial machine, without the table, the motor or the installation. Set it on a sturdy surface, plug it into a normal socket and you're ready to sew.

Looking after your machine
- Always switch off and unplug first. Before cleaning, changing the needle or opening the hook cover, turn the power off and pull the plug.
- Keep the hook area free of lint. Fluff builds up quickly at high speed, especially with cotton and quilt wadding. Open the hook cover and remove the needle plate as shown in your instruction book, then brush out the lint around the hook and feed dogs with the brush supplied.
- Oil it as the instruction book shows. Use only the sewing machine oil supplied, or a good-quality sewing machine oil, and only on the points shown in the "Oiling the machine" section. A drop is plenty — wipe away any excess before you sew. If the machine starts to sound noisy or feel heavy, it usually needs cleaning and oiling.
- Change the needle often. A blunt or bent needle is one of the most common causes of skipped stitches and broken thread. Fit a new HLx5 needle at the start of each big project, or sooner if you hit a pin.
- Use the right bobbins. Only use HD9 metal bobbins that match your machine's version. Wind them on the machine's own bobbin winder.
- Keep it covered. Pop the dust cover on when you've finished for the day to keep dust out of the mechanism.
- Book a regular service. Even with good home care, a professional service clears out lint you can't reach and checks the timing and tension. If you sew most days, once a year is a sensible guide.

Delivery, Installation & Returns
Can the HD9 sew zigzag?
No — it's a straight stitch machine only. There are no zigzag, stretch or decorative stitches, and no buttonholes. If you need those, you'll want a second machine alongside it.
Is it an industrial machine?
Not quite. It's a semi-industrial domestic machine: it borrows industrial features like the rotary hook, HLx5 needles and pre-tension threading, but it's portable, runs from a normal socket and doesn't need a table or installation.
Will it handle denim and canvas?
Yes. Plenty of foot pressure, a high foot lift and the knee lifter make thick fabrics and multiple layers much easier to manage. Just use the right needle size for the job.
What about leather?
It's fine for light leather and leather-look fabrics. If you work with heavier leather regularly, an industrial walking foot machine will serve you better — we're happy to recommend one.
What's the difference between the HD9 and the HD9 QC?
The QC adds a drop feed, a floating presser foot function, a slightly higher top speed and a set of quilting feet. If you're mainly a quilter, it's worth a conversation before you choose.
Which needles does it take?
HLx5 needles. Standard domestic needles won't work in this machine.
Which bobbins does it take?
Its own large-capacity metal bobbins — standard domestic bobbins won't fit. Check whether you have a V1 or V2 machine before ordering spares, or just give us a call.
How heavy is it?
Around 14kg. There's a carry handle, but it's happiest set up on a solid table and left there.
Can you service it?
Yes. We service and repair domestic and industrial machines in our London workshop. Call 0208 769 2998 to book.
