Product Details
Why choose the Janome Continental M17?
Big designs, one hooping. Re-hooping is where alignment goes wrong. With 460 x 280mm to play with, large designs stitch out in a single run, exactly where you placed them.
Space to move a quilt. 343mm from needle to body and 140mm of height means a king-size quilt can be rolled, turned and fed without fighting the machine.
Layers that stay together. AcuFeed Flex feeds the fabric from above while a 7-piece feed dog works below, so quilt sandwiches, velvets and slippery silks move through evenly instead of creeping.
Even stitches in free motion. The Accurate Stitch Regulator reads how fast you move the fabric and adjusts the needle to match. Speed up or slow down and your stitch length stays consistent. Four A.S.R. feet are included, one of them for ruler work.
Two screens, less tapping. The large colour touchscreen handles stitches and designs, while the second screen keeps your sewing settings in view. You spend less time in menus and more time at the needle.
Designs straight from your device. Send embroidery files wirelessly from a computer, tablet or phone, or use USB. Artistic Digitizer Jr is included, so you can create your own designs on Windows or Mac from day one.
Who is it for?
The M17 makes the most sense if you:
● Quilt regularly and are tired of wrestling large projects through a small arm
● Embroider and want bigger designs without moving to a multi-needle machine
● Run a small personalisation or embroidery business producing one-off and short-run pieces
● Own a mid-range combination machine and know exactly what it can't do
● Teach sewing, quilting or embroidery at a college or university and want one machine that covers all three
It is worth being clear about what it isn't. The M17 is a single-needle domestic machine. If you need to produce embroidery in volume, a multi-needle commercial machine will be quicker and better value. Not sure which way to go? Call us on 0208 769 2998. We would rather sell you the right machine than the most expensive one.
Information
Most sewists reach a point where their machine starts holding them back. The quilt won't fit through the arm. The embroidery has to be split across three hoopings. The feet keep slipping on velvet. The Continental M17 is Janome's answer to all of that, and it is the flagship of their entire domestic range.
It pairs a full sewing and quilting machine with an embroidery unit that stitches designs up to 460 x 280mm in one go. That is Janome's largest domestic hoop, big enough for a jacket back, a full quilt block or a framed wall piece without stopping to re-hoop. Alongside it you get 343mm of space to the right of the needle, two touchscreens, 850 stitches and 1,230 built-in designs.
This is a serious investment, and it is built for people who sew seriously.

Looking after your machine
- Use the lock button before changing the needle, presser foot or needle plate, so the machine can't start while your fingers are near the needle
- Switch off and unplug before any cleaning
- Brush out lint from under the needle plate and around the bobbin area regularly, especially after quilting with wadding or embroidering dense designs
- Change the needle often, and straight away if it's bent, blunt or you hear a popping sound as it stitches. A tired needle is the most common cause of skipped stitches and thread breaks
- Match the needle to the job: embroidery needles for embroidery, quilting needles for quilting
- Use Janome bobbins made for this machine, as other bobbins can cause tension problems
- Choose good-quality thread. Cheaper thread breaks more often and leaves more lint behind
- Let the embroidery unit move the hoop. Never push, pull or hold it while it's stitching, as this can knock the arm out of alignment
- Take the embroidery unit off before moving the machine, and lift the machine by its body, not the arm
- Only oil it if your manual says to, and only where it shows
- Keep the software up to date with Janome's latest updates [CONFIRM how updates are applied on UK machines]
- Keep it under its cover when not in use, in a dry room away from direct sunlight

Before you order
Delivery, Installation & Returns
How big can I embroider?
Up to 460 x 280mm in a single hooping, using the RE46d hoop that comes with the machine.
Can I still use it as a normal sewing machine?
Yes. It is a full sewing and quilting machine first. Attach the embroidery unit when you want to embroider, and take it off when you want your flat bed back.
Is it a good choice for quilting?
Yes, it is built for it. You get 343mm of space to the right of the needle, AcuFeed Flex to keep layers together, and the Accurate Stitch Regulator for even free-motion and ruler work.
What does the Accurate Stitch Regulator actually do?
When you quilt free-motion, you move the fabric by hand, and stitch length usually varies with your speed. The A.S.R. senses that movement and adjusts the needle to match, so your stitches stay even.
How do I get designs onto the machine?
Wirelessly from a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone or Android device, by USB stick, or through the direct computer port. Whichever suits your setup.
Can I use designs I've bought online?
The M17 reads Janome .JEF, .JEF+ and .JPX files. Most design shops offer these formats, and files in other formats can be converted using embroidery software.
Does the software work on a Mac?
Artistic Digitizer Jr, which is included, runs on both Windows and Mac. Some of Janome's other free PC tools are Windows only.
Do you service Janome machines?
Yes. Our London workshop services and repairs domestic sewing and embroidery machines.
Is it too advanced for a beginner?
A confident beginner can learn on it, but it really comes into its own in experienced hands. If you are just starting out with embroidery, give us a call. A smaller Janome may be better value while you build your skills.
How much room does it need?
With the embroidery arm fitted it measures 1112mm wide and weighs about 30kg, so you will want a sturdy table at least that long.
Can I see one before I buy?
Of course. Call 0208 769 2998 to arrange a visit to our shop in Streatham
