Built in Switzerland as a heavy-duty industrial zigzag machine, the 217 earned its reputation for neat, even stitches and a mechanism that stays in adjustment day after day.
This is the N-06 version, which gives you a clean straight stitch and a zigzag up to 6 mm wide on the same head. We've refurbished it in our workshop, fitted it to an industrial table with a quiet servo motor, and sewn it off ourselves before listing it. It's ready to go to work.

Looking after your machine
- Oil it every day you use it. Put a few drops of sewing machine oil on the hook and moving parts before you start. The manual shows where.
- Keep it clean. Brush the fluff and thread out from around the bobbin and under the needle plate every few days.
- Change the needle often. Fit a new one when you start a new project, or sooner if stitches start skipping. Always use the right needle size for your fabric and thread.
- Cover it when you’ve finished. This stops dust getting into the machine.
- Get it serviced once a year. Our engineers can check it over, adjust it and keep it running smoothly.

What does N-06 mean?
It tells you the maximum zigzag width. The N-06 sews a zigzag up to 6 mm wide. You'll also see N-08 and N-12 versions with wider zigzags
Will it sew a normal straight stitch?
Yes. Turn the zigzag width down to zero and it sews a straight stitch, forwards and in reverse.
Is it new?
No. Bernina no longer makes the 217, so every one on the market today is second-hand. This one has been fully refurbished and tested by our engineers.
Can it handle leather or heavy upholstery?
It's happiest on light to medium fabrics and canvas. For thick leather, heavy upholstery or full sail making, you'll want a walking foot machine or a wider zigzag. Call us and we'll recommend
Why a servo motor?
A servo motor is quiet, only runs when you press the pedal and uses far less electricity than an old clutch motor. It also makes slow, careful sewing much easier, which is a big help on detailed work or if you're new to industrial machines.
Will it plug into a normal socket?
Yes, it runs on a standard 230 V household supply.
Can I still get parts for it?
Needles, bobbins and everyday wearing parts are easy to get hold of. Some Bernina-specific parts are now harder to find, which is one more reason to have it looked after by a specialist. Our engineers service and repair industrial machines in our London workshop.
Is there a warranty?
6 months. This doesn't affect your statutory rights.
