Janome Atelier 9 Sewing & Embroidery Machine
Brand: Janome210MM Arm Space
Features
- Sewing. 300 built-in stitches, including 11 one-step buttonholes, plus upper and lower case lettering. Stitches go up to 9mm wide and 5mm long, with 91 needle positions and a top speed of 1,000 stitches per minute. Stitch Composer lets you design your own stitches, and you can save combinations to use again. The bed converts between free arm and flatbed, so sleeves and cuffs are as easy as quilt tops.
- Embroidery. 250 built-in designs and 10 fonts, with 2- and 3-letter monogramming and text on an arc. On the touchscreen you can resize, rotate, flip, duplicate and drag designs into position, then group colours to cut down on thread changes. The machine trims jump threads for you and shows how long the design has left. It also does embroidery couching (11 designs, two couching feet included) and cutwork, and it reads Janome's .jef files.
- Quilting. AcuFeed Flex dual feed comes with both twin and single foot holders, working alongside a 7-piece feed dog. Drop the feed and use one of the three free-motion quilting feet supplied — the machine remembers the foot height you set. Presser foot pressure and lift are automatic, and the electronic knee lift raises the foot so you can turn a quilt without letting go.
- Everyday use. A full-colour touchscreen with on-screen help, automatic tension, an automatic needle threader and thread cutter, and sensors that warn you when the top or bobbin thread runs out. The bobbin drops in from the top, the needle plate changes without tools, and six LEDs light the work area from three angles.
- Connectivity. Wi-Fi design transfer, a USB stick port and direct PC connection, with 4MB of built-in memory. It also works with Janome's AcuEdit, AcuMonitor and AcuSetter apps.

Product Details
Why choose the janome Atelier 9?
You only need one machine. Sewing, quilting and embroidery all happen on the same base, so you're not giving up desk space or learning two different machines.
It handles real embroidery projects. The 170 x 200mm field and three hoops cover everything from small logos to full-size motifs.
Getting designs on is easy. Send them over Wi-Fi, plug in a USB stick or connect to your computer whichever suits the way you work.
Layers stay where you put them. AcuFeed Flex feeds the top fabric in step with the bottom, so quilts, stripes and slippery fabrics don't creep.
The machine does the fiddly bits. Thread tension, presser foot pressure, thread cutting and trimming jump stitches between colours are all automatic.
Your finishing looks sharper. Stitch Tapering lets satin and decorative stitches narrow to a neat point, which makes a real difference on appliqué and lettering.
Who is it for?
The Atelier 9 suits sewists who already know they love making things and want to add embroidery without buying a second machine. It's a natural step up for quilters who want dual feed, free-motion feet and a knee lift, and for dressmakers who want a reliable everyday machine with plenty of stitches and buttonholes.
It's also a good fit for small makers personalising gifts, garments and homeware, and for schools and colleges that teach garment construction and machine embroidery side by side.
It isn't for everyone, and we'd rather tell you now. If you want to stitch very large designs or jacket backs, a dedicated embroidery machine with a bigger field, such as the Janome Memory Craft 550E, will serve you better. If you'll never embroider, a sewing-only machine will save you money. Call us on 0208 769 2998 and we'll point you in the right direction.
Information
Most people who want to embroider end up with two machines and not enough table. The Janome Atelier 9 solves that. It's a full computerised sewing machine with 300 stitches, and when you want to embroider, you clip on the embroidery unit and you're ready to go.
The embroidery side is properly capable. You get 250 built-in designs, 10 fonts and a maximum area of 170 x 200mm — big enough for cushion fronts, bag panels and tea towels, not just names on cuffs. Three hoops come in the box, and you can send your own designs to the machine over Wi-Fi.
Take the unit off and it's a serious sewing and quilting machine in its own right, with around 210mm (8.3") of space to the right of the needle, Janome's AcuFeed Flex dual feed and a knee lift for keeping both hands on the fabric.

Delivery, Installation & Returns
How big can I embroider on the Atelier 9?
Up to 170 x 200mm, using the large RE20a hoop that comes in the box. That covers most cushion, bag and garment designs. If you regularly stitch larger pieces, ask us about machines with a bigger field.
Can I use it as an ordinary sewing machine?
Yes. Slide off the embroidery unit and you have a full computerised sewing and quilting machine, with free arm or flatbed sewing.
What does the Wi-Fi actually do?
It lets you send embroidery designs from your computer or device straight to the machine, without a USB stick. If you'd rather use a stick or a cable, both work too. Ask us which Janome apps currently work with your device.
Will my embroidery files work?
The machine reads Janome's .jef format. Designs in other formats can be converted with embroidery software, and many design shops offer .jef downloads directly.
Do I need to buy embroidery software?
Not to get started. There are 250 designs and 10 fonts built in, and you can resize, rotate and combine them on the screen. Software only becomes useful if you want to create your own designs from scratch.
What is Stitch Tapering?
It gradually narrows a satin or decorative stitch at the start and end of a line, so it finishes in a clean point instead of a blunt edge. It's lovely for appliqué, lettering and leaf or petal shapes.
What is AcuFeed Flex?
It's Janome's removable top feed. It grips and moves the top layer of fabric at the same pace as the feed dogs underneath, so your layers stay lined up. You'll notice it most on quilts, checks, stripes and slippery fabrics.
Will it sew thick fabrics?
It copes well with denim, quilt layers and soft furnishings, thanks to AcuFeed Flex and automatic foot pressure. If you'll be sewing leather or upholstery every day, an industrial machine is the better tool for the job.
Is it a good machine for a beginner?
It is if you're serious about both sewing and embroidery. Automatic tension, the needle threader and on-screen help take a lot of the guesswork out. If you're just trying sewing for the first time, a simpler machine will cost a lot less — give us a call and we'll help you decide.
Can you service it later on?
Yes. We service and repair domestic sewing and embroidery machines in our London workshop.
Can I do free-motion quilting?
Yes. Drop the feed dogs, fit one of the three free-motion feet supplied, and set the foot height — the machine remembers it for next time.
