Product Details
Why choose the Atelier 6?
● Quilts actually fit. There's about 210mm of space to the right of the needle and 120mm of height, plus a wide extension table to take the weight of the fabric.
● Layers stay where you put them. AcuFeed Flex grips the top layer as the feed dogs move the bottom, so quilt sandwiches, checks and slippery fabrics come out lined up.
● Buttonholes you won't need to unpick. There are ten one-step styles, and the machine sizes each one to the button.
● Small jobs are done for you. It threads the needle, sets the tension and trims the thread, so you get on with sewing.
● Your hands stay on the fabric. Lift the foot with your knee, stop with the needle down and pivot round corners without letting go.
● Most of the Atelier 7 for less. You get the same workspace, speed and dual feed, but you only pay for the stitches most people use.
Who is it for?
Dressmakers who want neat buttonholes, a 9mm stitch width and 91 needle positions for exact topstitching.
Quilters who need the throat space and even feeding of a bigger machine but don't need embroidery.
Upgraders leaving behind a mechanical or entry-level machine and wanting something that will last them years.
Confident beginners who already know they'll be sewing every week. The automatic features make it easy to learn on, and you won't outgrow it.
Schools, colleges and textile departments looking for a dependable computerised machine that's backed by a local service workshop.
Not sure it's the right one? If you want a colour touchscreen and automatic presser foot lift, look at the Atelier 7. If you want embroidery as well, the Atelier 9 does both. If you're sewing leather or upholstery every day, you need an industrial machine. Ring us on 0208 769 2998 and we'll tell you straight.
Information
Most people who come to us for the Atelier 6 have hit the limits of their first machine. The quilt won't fit under the arm, the layers creep, the buttonholes never come out quite even. This is the machine that fixes all three.
Janome released the Anniversary Edition to mark ten years of the Atelier range. It's slimmer than before, you get a clearer view of the needle, and the extension table now comes in the box. Underneath, it has what made the Atelier 6 popular in the first place: 210mm of space to the right of the needle, 196 stitches and Janome's AcuFeed Flex, which feeds the top layer of fabric along with the bottom.
It's a machine you can sew a dress on on Saturday and quilt a bed-size top on by Sunday, without fighting it.

Looking after your machine
- Change the needle often. Fit a new one every 8 hours of sewing, or straight away if it hits a pin.
- Match the needle to the fabric. Use stretch needles for knits, jeans needles for denim and finer needles for silks.
- Brush out the lint. Remove the needle plate and clear the feed dogs and bobbin area after every big project.
- Use the right bobbins. Stick to genuine Janome bobbins made for this machine. Ill-fitting ones cause tension problems.
- Use good-quality thread. Cheap thread sheds more lint and breaks more often.
- Don't oil it unless the manual says so. Too much oil attracts dust and can stain your fabric.
- Keep it covered. Put the cover on when you finish to keep dust out.
- Store it somewhere dry. Avoid damp garages and sheds, and spots in direct sunlight.
- Get it serviced. If you sew regularly, a professional service about once a year keeps it running smoothly. Our workshop can do this for you.

What's different about the Anniversary Edition?
Janome made it to celebrate ten years of the Atelier range. The body is slimmer, the view around the needle is clearer and the extension table now comes as standard. The core sewing features are the ones Atelier 6 owners already rate.
Should I get the Atelier 6 or the Atelier 7?
Both have the same 210mm workspace, the same 1,000 stitches-per-minute top speed and AcuFeed Flex. The Atelier 7 adds 44 more stitches, a colour touchscreen, automatic foot lift, 7 alphabets and two extra free-motion feet. If none of those make you sit up, the Atelier 6 is the smarter buy.
Does it do embroidery?
No. It sews lettering with its 4 built-in alphabets, but it has no embroidery unit. If you want embroidery, look at the Janome Atelier 9.
Is it big enough for quilting?
Yes, for most home quilting. There's about 210mm to the right of the needle and 120mm of height, and the extension table carries the weight of the quilt so it doesn't drag.
What does AcuFeed Flex actually do?
It's a removable upper feed that moves the top layer of fabric at the same pace as the feed dogs move the bottom. Without it, the top layer tends to creep ahead. With it, quilt layers, stripes, velvet and slippery fabrics stay lined up.
Can I free-motion quilt on it?
Yes. Drop the feed dogs, fit the darning/free-motion foot that's in the box and off you go. Open-toe and closed-toe free-motion feet are available separately if you want a clearer view.
Who services it when it needs it?
We do. Our workshop services and repairs domestic machines, Janome included, so you're not left on your own once the warranty is over.
Is it too advanced for a beginner?
Not if you're serious about sewing. Automatic tension, the needle threader and the start/stop button make it very easy to learn on. If you just want to see whether you enjoy sewing, a simpler machine makes more sense. Give us a ring and we'll point you to the right one.
Is it a UK model?
Yes. Every machine we sell is UK specification with a UK power lead.
Can I see one before I buy?
Of course. Call 0208 769 2998 and pop in to our shop at 286 Streatham High Road, London.
What presser feet does it take?
Snap-on 9mm high shank feet, which Janome calls Category D. There are 11 in the box, and plenty of optional feet are available when you're ready to experiment.
Will it handle thick fabric?
Denim, canvas, quilt layers and soft furnishings, yes. AcuFeed Flex and the adjustable foot pressure do the work. For heavy leather or daily upholstery, you'll want an industrial machine, and we sell those too.
