Product Details
Why choose the Atelier 5 Anniversary Edition?
Your hands stay where they belong. Nudge the knee lifter and the presser foot rises, so you can pivot round corners and reposition a quilt without letting go. Set the needle to stop down and the fabric stays exactly where you left it.
A walking foot in the box. The even feed foot moves the top layer of fabric along with the bottom one, so quilt sandwiches don't creep and stripes and checks still line up at the seam. A quilting guide bar comes with it for evenly spaced lines.
Room to work. With 210mm of workspace and the extension table fitted, a bed quilt or a pair of curtains sits flat in front of you instead of dragging off the edge.
Stitches with real presence. At 9mm wide, decorative stitches look bold and finished rather than timid. Stretch them up to five times their length, flip them into a mirror image or save a sequence to use again.
The small jobs, done for you. The machine threads the needle, sets the tension and trims both threads at the touch of a button. Fewer interruptions mean more of your time goes into the sewing itself.
Built to keep going. A die-cast aluminium frame keeps the machine steady at speed, and it will run at up to 1,000 stitches a minute when you have long seams to get through.
Who is it for?
The Atelier 5 is a natural fit for quilters who want a walking foot, a knee lifter and space to manoeuvre without stepping up to a specialist quilting machine. Dressmakers will appreciate the ten buttonhole styles, the straight stitch needle plate for fine fabrics and the precise control over stitch placement. It suits anyone upgrading from an entry-level machine who wants something they will not outgrow, as well as committed beginners who would rather buy once. It handles home furnishings such as cushions, curtains and bags with ease, and it is a well-supported choice for schools, colleges and textile departments.
It is not the right machine for everyone. If you quilt most days or work with slippery fabrics, the Atelier 6 has Janome's AcuFeed Flex system built in. If you want embroidery, look at the Atelier 9. And if you sew leather or upholstery every day, you need an industrial machine. Not sure which way to go? Call us on 0208 769 2998. We would rather sell you the right machine than the wrong one.
Information
There comes a point where a sewing machine either keeps up with you or holds you back. You start wanting wider decorative stitches, a proper walking foot for quilts, and a way to lift the presser foot without letting go of the fabric. The Atelier 5 is the machine in Janome's range that brings all of that together, and the Anniversary Edition, released to mark ten years of the Atelier line, comes with even more in the box.
You get 170 stitches up to 9mm wide, ten one-step buttonholes and a generous 210mm of space to the right of the needle. A knee lifter, an even feed foot and an extra-wide extension table are all included. So whether you are turning a collar, piecing a quilt top or running up a pair of curtains, you have the right tools from the first day, without a list of extras to buy.

Looking after your machine
- Change the needle often. Fit a new one every 8 hours of sewing, or straight away if it hits a pin.
- Match the needle to the fabric. Use stretch needles for knits, jeans needles for denim and finer needles for silks.
- Brush out the lint. Remove the needle plate and clear the feed dogs and bobbin area after every big project.
- Use the right bobbins. Stick to genuine Janome bobbins made for this machine. Ill-fitting ones cause tension problems.
- Use good-quality thread. Cheap thread sheds more lint and breaks more often.
- Don't oil it unless the manual says so. Too much oil attracts dust and can stain your fabric.
- Keep it covered. Put the cover on when you finish to keep dust out.
- Store it somewhere dry. Avoid damp garages and sheds, and spots in direct sunlight.
- Get it serviced. If you sew regularly, a professional service about once a year keeps it running smoothly. Our workshop can do this for you.

What's special about the Anniversary Edition?
It was released to celebrate ten years of Janome's Atelier range. It has a refreshed design, and the extra-wide extension table and knee lifter come as standard.
Does the Atelier 5 have AcuFeed Flex?
No. It comes with a separate snap-on walking foot, which does the same basic job of feeding the top layer of fabric evenly. AcuFeed Flex, which is built into the machine, starts at the Atelier 6.
Is it good for quilting?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people choose it. You get 210mm of workspace, an extension table, a ¼" seam foot for accurate piecing, a walking foot for straight-line quilting and a darning foot for free-motion work. The knee lifter makes turning a quilt much easier too.
Can I do free-motion quilting?
Yes. Drop the feed dogs, fit the darning foot supplied and you can stipple, meander or quilt in any direction. Open-toe and closed-toe free-motion feet are available separately if you want a clearer view.
Is it suitable for a beginner?
Yes, if you plan to keep sewing. The automatic threader, tension and thread cutter take a lot of the frustration out of learning, and you won't outgrow it. If you only want to try sewing first, a simpler machine will cost less, and we are happy to recommend one.
Will it sew denim and thicker fabrics?
Yes, within sensible domestic limits. The walking foot and adjustable foot pressure help with denim, canvas, quilt layers and furnishing fabrics. It is not built for heavy-duty or commercial work, though. For daily leather or upholstery, you need an industrial machine.
Can you service it later on?
Yes. We service and repair domestic sewing machines, including Janome, in our London workshop.
Can it embroider?
No. It sews lettering for names and labels, but there is no embroidery unit. For embroidery, take a look at the Janome Atelier 9.
Is it a UK model?
Yes. We supply the UK model, with a UK plug.
Which presser feet fit it?
It takes snap-on 9mm high shank feet (Janome Category D). Eleven come in the box, and there is a wide range of optional Category D feet for quilting, dressmaking and home furnishings.
Atelier 5 or Atelier 3: which should I buy?
Both share the same 210mm workspace and automatic threading and trimming. The Atelier 5 adds 50 stitches, a 9mm stitch width, a knee lifter, a walking foot and four more presser feet. If you quilt or want more creative options, the Atelier 5 is worth the step up.
Can I see it before I buy?
Of course. Call 0208 769 2998 and we will arrange a time for you to visit our shop at 286 Streatham High Road, London.
